A few weeks ago when I wrote about Led Zeppelin I said that I was undecided on if I liked them or not. Well after listening to Led Zeppelin 4, I discovered that I had more interest in their songs than I thought I did. After listening through the album, there were a few songs that stood out to me. Those three songs were Black Dog, Going To California, and When The Levee Breaks. I'm not sure what it was that caught my attention about these songs but I did enjoy listening to them during class. These artists definitely show their musical talent through their songs and as an audience, that's something that I enjoy observing. Led Zeppelin might not be my favorite group, but they also aren't the worst. So in conclusion, Led Zeppelin is slowly getting to me.
Sometimes when I feel really stressed or am full of bottled emotions, I turn to slower songs that really reach out to me. This week's choice for a slow song was Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. This song is one of those that climbed it's way to the top of my favorites list after listening to it a numerous amount of times. I'm not too entirely sure on what this song means, but I do enjoy the beat and rhythm. I'm a dancer and when I chose songs to dance to I look for rhythm as well as a song that I can easily express who I am through the music and moves. To me this song would be a great choice for a lyrical or contemporary dance because it's full of emotions. If you haven't checked out this song, I highly recommend it. My sister showed me this song and I'm so glad she did. Hide and Seek is a great choice and Imogen Heap does a fantastic job of capturing lyrical elements that can be expressed through emotions.
This week's find is one by the talented and amazing singer Kelly Clarkson. One of her new songs, Dark Side, really reached out to me not only with the music but also the lyrics. Not every song means something to me but this one definitely did. Especially the part when she says:
Everybody's got a dark side
Do you love me?
Can you love mine?
Nobody's a picture perfect
But we're worth it
You know that we're worth it
Will you love me?
Even with my dark side?
Like a diamond
From black dust
It's hard to know
What can become
If you give up
So don't give up on me
Please remind me who I really am
Don't run away
Don't run away
Just tell me that you will stay
Promise me you will stay
Don't run away
Don't run away
Just promise me you will stay
Promise me you will stay
To me that means that even when things get tough, soon they will get better. Everybody has days where they just want to give up but you shouldn't. This song spoke to me and I really do like it. The music is also strong just like the lyrics. I believe the beat fits well and that it's a catchy and meaningful song. Definitely at the top of my list. Also the video is cool too! Even when things get too difficult to handle just remember no one is alone and that it isn't the end of the world. My mom always told me 'wait to worry'. Live with that and you'll make it just fine! Trust me.
This week during class we watched a very interesting yet effective documentary, titled RiP: A Remix Manifesto, on illegal copy writing. I learned that anyone who downloads music illegally from any source on the web can be easily caught, whether or not they erase their tracks. I myself am a strong believer that this action of using material that doesn't belong to the public for our own use is wrong. I have never stolen music nor do I plan on it. My morals are much higher than that and I would feel guilty way too easily. Even though I would never steal music and I don't believe it's right, the number of lawsuits and the amount of money put into these lawsuits is incredible and a bit ridiculous in my opinion. This documentary taught me that people in this generation are illegally downloading music for their own use and no matter their excuse, it's always wrong and needs to be stopped. I know stopping one person won't change much, but trying to spread the word about how wrong it truly is might make enough of a difference. Stand up for what you believe in, and for me that's working to stop illegal downloading of material that people don't have the right to download. Yes a lot of my friends download music and that's their decision. However, that's one decision I know I don't have to worry about because I would never do that. That's not who I am and if you ask me, it isn't worth the money or any lawsuits for that matter. Think about it the next time you want to take something that doesn't belong to you and remember, is it worth it?
According to Billboard chart statistics, Chicago is second only to the Beach Boys as the most successful American rock band of all time, in terms of both albums and singles (allmusic). Well this week in class we listened to the band Chicago, the musically talented group who was heavy in the 1970's, and I really enjoyed listening to their music. To be honest, I'm picky about listening to older bands but I'm starting to really enjoy this band. In my opinion, Chicago is one of those bands whose name you could never forget after you start to like them. I'm so glad our teacher played their song Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is. That song is a great song, both lyrically and melodically. After hearing them and liking them, I looked up some of their other songs, such as Hard To Say I'm Sorry and Will You Still Love Me. Those songs as well are definitely some of my favorites because of their well- written lyrics that mean something to me and because they have soft yet powerful rhythms. Those aren't the only songs I liked but the top three. After listening and approving Chicago, I've realized that I should be more open to listening to new selections whether or not they're new bands. Who knows what all I've been missing! Don't make the same mistake. Widen your selection and see for yourself the amazing new artists that you find. I guarantee you won't be disappointed. - Caroline
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is with lyrics
Whenever I search for
new music that will interest me I listen for a few key parts. First, does it
have well- written and meaningful lyrics? Second, does it have a good beat and
rhythm? And third, is it something that I can relate some of my experiences to
and/or does it describe how I'm feeling? I know there are more points than just
those three that make up a good song but those are just the top ones that I
consider. Recently, I found a song that only really has two of those three
things, yet it's still a great find! Battle
Scars, by Lupe Fiasco and Guy Sebastian, doesn't really present lyrics that
I can relate to. However, the song definitely has well written lyrics as well
as a good beat. I love this song and I've listened to it so much in the last
week that it's one of my favorites at the moment. Battle Scars not only soared to the top of my favorites list but
has also showed me that it doesn't have to relate to how I'm feeling for it to
be a good song. I'm not sure on the true meaning of this song, but whatever it
may be I'm sure it speaks to someone. Music is a powerful tool and I believe
that this song, with its well- written lyrics and sound that shows the artists'
exquisite talent, is a great example of good music! If you're interested in a
song that actually stands out then I think I just discovered your next find!
